HOJ Electrical is an ATEX approved electrical contractor carrying out installation, inspection, and maintenance work in explosive and hazardous atmospheres across the UK. Standard electrical methods aren't suitable in these environments, so every job is carried out to BS EN 60079 standards by engineers holding current CompEx certification.
This is specialist work, and we take it on nationally rather than limiting it to our Hereford base. If you're in an industry where flammable gases, vapours, or combustible dust are part of daily operations, you need a contractor who understands hazardous area classification properly, not one applying a generic assumption to a site that doesn't fit it.

While HOJ Electrical is based in Hereford, our ATEX work takes us across the country, including regular projects in London, the West Midlands, Northampton, and Kettering. If your site falls under DSEAR and you need ATEX-compliant electrical work, get in touch regardless of location.
Before any equipment is specified, the area itself needs to be correctly classified by zone. We review your site and confirm that gas, vapour, or dust groupings and temperature classifications match what's actually present, rather than defaulting to a blanket rating that either overspecifies or, worse, underprotects the site.
We supply and install Ex-rated equipment, including enclosures, junction boxes, cable glands, and field devices, in line with manufacturer certification and BS EN 60079 requirements. That covers correct glanding and sealing, wiring segregation, earthing continuity, and maintaining the right IP rating throughout, so the installation performs exactly as its certification says it will.
Hazardous area installations need regular inspection to stay compliant, whether they were fitted by us or another contractor. We carry out first-time, periodic, and sample inspections to BS EN 60079-17, grade the condition of existing Ex-equipment, and keep your asset register and documentation up to date. Where equipment has degraded or fallen out of compliance, we replace it as part of the same visit.
When something goes wrong in a hazardous area, diagnosis has to be handled correctly to avoid compromising the zone's safety. We identify and resolve faults in line with your site's safety procedures and provide the documentation needed to demonstrate ongoing compliance.
Our engineers hold CompEx Ex01-04 certification, the recognised UK competency scheme for electrical work in explosive atmospheres. It covers installation, inspection, maintenance, and equipment selection specifically for ATEX-regulated environments, which means the person on your site isn't working from general electrical knowledge applied to a hazardous setting. They're trained specifically for it.
It means the contractor's engineers are qualified to work in potentially explosive atmospheres under BS EN 60079 and hold current CompEx certification. It's not a general electrical qualification, it's specific to hazardous area work.
Yes. Our ATEX work is delivered nationally, including regular projects in London, the West Midlands, Northampton, and Kettering.
This depends on the equipment, its zone classification, and how it's used, but most sites schedule inspections annually or as part of routine maintenance. We provide grading reports and documentation in line with BS EN 60079-17.
Yes. We regularly inspect and maintain hazardous area installations we didn't originally fit, and we'll bring the asset register and documentation up to date as part of that work.
